CBSE vs ICSE for a child who is bright but not very exam-oriented — looking for recent parent experiences

Anjali Patil

We are choosing between nearby Cambridge and CBSE schools. Our child loves stories and projects but gets bored with repetitive worksheets. Parents who have experienced both systems, what differences did you notice in everyday workload rather than brochure claims? If you faced the same decision and later changed your mind, I would love to know why.

We asked what happens when a child is struggling, not just what happens to top performers. The answer told us more about the school culture than the brochure did. We found this out only after doing a second school visit. I would still test it for a short period before making a long commitment.

We made a simple spreadsheet with total annual cost, travel time, class size and what we observed during the visit. It stopped us getting distracted by facilities we would barely use. I would still verify it with the school for the current academic year. In our house, the practical routine mattered more than the ideal plan.

Interesting — we had assumed the opposite. Helpful to hear a first-hand experience. I wish we had asked this before paying the registration amount. We only reached that conclusion after trying the other approach first.

This is useful, thank you. The practical detail is exactly what I was looking for. I wish we had asked this before paying the registration amount. I would still test it for a short period before making a long commitment.

We asked what happens when a child is struggling, not just what happens to top performers. The answer told us more about the school culture than the brochure did. For us, the admission office answer and the parent answer were not always the same. We are in Bengaluru, so local logistics may be a little different.

Did your child take time to adjust, or was the improvement fairly quick? We found this out only after doing a second school visit. We are in Pune, so local logistics may be a little different.

Thanks for saying this. Online advice often makes normal family life sound much more organised than it really is. We found this out only after doing a second school visit. In our house, the practical routine mattered more than the ideal plan.

This is close to what my spouse is suggesting too. I may have been overcomplicating it. The commute piece changed our final shortlist more than expected. Your child's response may be different, but this was our experience.

We have the same issue, so following this thread closely. I wish we had asked this before paying the registration amount. We made the change gradually rather than all at once.

That is reassuring. We are trying to avoid making this a bigger issue than it needs to be. We found this out only after doing a second school visit. We are in Hyderabad, so local logistics may be a little different.

Thank you. I like that this does not require changing everything at once. I would still verify it with the school for the current academic year. In our house, the practical routine mattered more than the ideal plan.

Could you share what you would do differently if you were starting again? For us, the admission office answer and the parent answer were not always the same. Your child's response may be different, but this was our experience.

Same here. The logistics are what make the 'ideal' option difficult in real life. For us, the admission office answer and the parent answer were not always the same. We made the change gradually rather than all at once.

Our child reacted better once we explained the change in advance instead of announcing it on the day. For us, the admission office answer and the parent answer were not always the same.
