Bedtime with two children of very different ages — looking for recent parent experiences

sj3622

The younger one needs an early routine while the older one has homework and wants time with us later. Right now both bedtimes feel rushed. Families with a 4–6 year age gap, how do you organise evenings? I would especially value recent experiences from the last one or two academic years.

We try to discuss disagreements away from the children and present one answer. We are not always successful, but it stopped the 'ask the other parent' loop. The biggest surprise was that the practical routine mattered more than the option that looked best on paper. A little predictable one-to-one time changed the mood more than we expected. We only reached that conclusion after trying the other approach first.

Thanks for saying this. Online advice often makes normal family life sound much more organised than it really is. Discussing it away from the children reduced the back-and-forth. We only reached that conclusion after trying the other approach first.

We try to discuss disagreements away from the children and present one answer. We are not always successful, but it stopped the 'ask the other parent' loop. We picked the two boundaries that mattered most and relaxed about smaller differences. We are in Nagpur, so local logistics may be a little different.

We try to discuss disagreements away from the children and present one answer. We are not always successful, but it stopped the 'ask the other parent' loop. Our child reacted better once we explained the change in advance instead of announcing it on the day. The rule became easier once all adults used the same answer. We made the change gradually rather than all at once.

Did your child take time to adjust, or was the improvement fairly quick? The rule became easier once all adults used the same answer. In our house, the practical routine mattered more than the ideal plan.

Could you share what you would do differently if you were starting again? We picked the two boundaries that mattered most and relaxed about smaller differences. We are in Bengaluru, so local logistics may be a little different.
