3 year old wants whatever's on my plate, and my food is properly spicy

He's decided his own plate is boring and wants exactly what I'm eating. I grew up on very spicy food and still cook that way for myself, then make a separate bland version for him. He sees the difference and refuses his. Gave him a bit of my dal last week. He cried, then asked for more 🤷 How did you build up spice gradually? Or do you just cook one milder version for everyone?

We're only starting solids with my daughter, but my mother's trick was always taking out the child's portion before the final tadka. Same dal, same vegetables, the chilli just goes in after. She also adds a spoon of curd or ghee on the child's plate. Takes the heat down without looking any different ❤️

the before-tadka trick is so obvious I'm a bit embarrassed. trying it tonight. curd on everything he will happily accept

nowhere near this stage ourselves but my partner's family puts green chilli in everything and the cousins all eat it from about 4. they got there by stealing off adult plates, like yours is doing. maybe just let him keep losing to the dal
