14 yr old tells every relative 'not medicine' before anyone asks

mint_sparrow_4003

i'm a paediatrician, half the family is in medicine. she's 14. at every family function she gets in first: 'i'm not doing medicine'. nobody had asked. i really am fine with whatever she picks. i think she thinks i'm not. how do you show a teen you mean it without a whole sit-down conversation about it

ha. same script here at 14, surgeon mum. what worked: getting properly curious about the stuff he did like. no medical jokes at all. took months

agree on the no medical jokes. my son is 16 and at some point i realised the relatives were the problem not me. every uncle asking him about neet. i started answering for him at functions, something light, change the subject, and after a while he stopped needing to announce anything
