14 yr old has been paired with an autistic classmate for a summer project and wants to get it right

Our older son came home last week and said his partner for the summer science project is autistic and prefers messages to phone calls. He's not bothered by that at all. What he asked me was how to split the work so his partner doesn't end up with only the boring parts, because apparently that's what happened to the boy in a group last term. I didn't have a good answer. I said ask him. He said 'obviously, but what if he just says whatever'. Fair point 😄 Anyone whose kid has been in this spot, or parents of autistic teens who'd be willing to say what actually helps in pair work? I'd like to give him something better than 'be nice'.
