14 and already set on a residential junior college for 11th and 12th

Son is in class 9. A friend's elder brother went to a residential junior college and now our fellow has decided that's the plan for him also. It comes up every dinner. He says he'll study better away from home, phone, us, everything :) Naaku telidu if this is a phase or something we should take seriously and start looking into. What should we even be thinking about at this stage? Mainly I don't want to shut it down and have him resent it later.

ours stayed home for 11th and 12th and went away for college. i'm glad we had those two years with him at home, they were harder than i expected and i'd have missed them. whether it was better for him i really don't know. he's 22 and still won't say.

At 14 he may be choosing the idea of independence more than any particular college. That isn't a reason to dismiss it. I would take him to see one or two campuses in class 10, including the hostel rooms and the daily timetable, and let the reality do some of the talking. Our daughter was certain at 15 that she wanted to live away, cooled on it after one visit, and at 18 went anyway. The question isn't settled now and doesn't need to be.
