Working-parent guilt when your child says 'you always have meetings'

Geetha Murali

This one hit me harder than I expected. I do spend focused time with my child, but there are also days when work wins. How do other parents respond without overcompensating or promising things they cannot sustain?

When work is intense, I try to protect one predictable connection point with the child — breakfast, bath or bedtime — rather than chase a perfect number of hours. We are in Indore and this came up for us last year.

Thanks for saying this. Online advice often makes normal family life sound much more organised than it really is. Reducing handoffs made our weekdays noticeably calmer. We are in Chennai, so local logistics may be a little different.

This is useful, thank you. The practical detail is exactly what I was looking for. Reducing handoffs made our weekdays noticeably calmer. I would still test it for a short period before making a long commitment.

Could you share what you would do differently if you were starting again? Sharing the calendar between both parents removed a lot of last-minute confusion. I would still test it for a short period before making a long commitment.
