Domestic help is on leave for a month: what did you simplify first?

Both of us work and we suddenly have cooking, cleaning, school runs and bedtime all landing on the same two people. I know this is temporary, but I would love realistic survival-mode tips from families who have been through this.

The commute to childcare mattered more than we expected. A slightly less fancy place five minutes away ended up being much easier for the whole family. We are in Ahmedabad and this came up for us last year.

That is reassuring. We are trying to avoid making this a bigger issue than it needs to be. The system had to work on a bad workday, not only an ideal one. Your child's response may be different, but this was our experience.

That makes sense. I think consistency is the part we are currently missing. Sharing the calendar between both parents removed a lot of last-minute confusion. I would still test it for a short period before making a long commitment.

We put school events and pickup commitments directly on both work calendars. Hiding them made last-minute conflicts worse, not better. Reducing handoffs made our weekdays noticeably calmer. Your child's response may be different, but this was our experience.

We put school events and pickup commitments directly on both work calendars. Hiding them made last-minute conflicts worse, not better. My spouse had a different view initially, so we tried it for a few weeks before deciding. Sharing the calendar between both parents removed a lot of last-minute confusion. We are in Hyderabad, so local logistics may be a little different.

Thank you. I like that this does not require changing everything at once. We only appreciated the backup plan after the first unexpected school closure. We only reached that conclusion after trying the other approach first.

I agree with this. Once we reduced the number of moving parts, everyone became calmer. Reducing handoffs made our weekdays noticeably calmer. In our house, the practical routine mattered more than the ideal plan.

Exactly the kind of detail I needed. We simplified the routine before spending money on more help. In our house, the practical routine mattered more than the ideal plan.

Can I ask roughly what age/class your child was when you tried this? Sharing the calendar between both parents removed a lot of last-minute confusion. We made the change gradually rather than all at once.

Thanks for saying this. Online advice often makes normal family life sound much more organised than it really is. We only appreciated the backup plan after the first unexpected school closure. We are in Ahmedabad, so local logistics may be a little different.

We put school events and pickup commitments directly on both work calendars. Hiding them made last-minute conflicts worse, not better. The biggest surprise was that the practical routine mattered more than the option that looked best on paper. The system had to work on a bad workday, not only an ideal one. I would still test it for a short period before making a long commitment.

Good point about asking for the details in writing. I had not thought of that. We only appreciated the backup plan after the first unexpected school closure. Your child's response may be different, but this was our experience.

Could you share what you would do differently if you were starting again? We only appreciated the backup plan after the first unexpected school closure. We are in Hyderabad, so local logistics may be a little different.

When work is intense, I try to protect one predictable connection point with the child — breakfast, bath or bedtime — rather than chase a perfect number of hours. The system had to work on a bad workday, not only an ideal one. Your child's response may be different, but this was our experience.
