Which fish did you start your little one on, and how did you deal with the bones?

We're a fish-at-every-meal Malayali household, and our daughter has started reaching for whatever is on our plates. Her ammachi says just give her mathi curry and rice. Sardines are full of tiny bones, and I'm the one who will be picking through them. Did you start with something that has one central bone, like seer or pomfret? Steamed, or from the curry? And at what point did you stop checking every mouthful yourself?

This is from a long time ago, so take it as one family's practice rather than advice. We started our son on fish with a single large bone, flaked by hand, taken from the curry but without much gravy for the first few weeks. I checked every mouthful for far longer than necessary, well into his third year. Our paediatrician's only instruction was to introduce it on its own for a few days, in case of a reaction.
