When does class 9 really finish at SR Digi School in Alwal, and is there stay-back study?

rose_quilt_9629

My younger brother goes into class 9 in June, and the family is weighing a move to SR Digi School in Alwal. It is close to my clinic, and on most days I am the one who collects him, so the practical side falls to me as much as to our parents. The admission desk was helpful but gave the answers every school gives. What I would like to hear from families with a child in the higher classes is the ordinary part: when the day really ends for class 9, whether there are regular stay-back study hours, and how much homework comes home on a normal weekday. He is a reasonably organised boy who plays cricket in the evenings, and we would like to keep that if we can.

I have no experience of this school, so this is only about method. I have visited a fair number of schools through curriculum work, and the most reliable picture always came from standing outside at dispersal on an ordinary day and watching which classes left when, and how tired the older children looked. That is not possible in May, of course, but the first week of June would tell you more than any brochure. I would also ask the desk to put you in touch with one current class 9 parent. Some schools will do that if asked directly.

don't know this school. but my son has just finished class 9 and what changed his class 9 wasn't the school day, it was everyone signing up for tuition after it. by october he had about an hour of his own in the evening. if cricket matters to him i'd think about that more than the bell times

That is useful, and not something I had thought to ask about. Was the tuition something the school suggested, or did it come from the other parents?

Also, did he manage to keep up any sport through it? My brother would give up most things before cricket.

'Ordinary day' will get you ten different answers. Ask the desk three specific things: what time class 9 leaves on a normal Tuesday, whether Saturday is a full day, and how many study hours there are after school. Then ask a parent the same three and compare.

Is he coming from a CBSE school? If you do go ahead, I'd be interested to hear how that change goes at this stage. We may look at state board schools for our son for class 7, and I have no real idea how big the jump is.

Late reply after a long clinic day. One thing that helped when we compared schools for our son: ask to see an actual class 9 timetable, not the brochure version. You can tell a lot from how many periods go to maths and whether games survive in the senior classes.
