What to ask an after-school centre before trusting it with the school van drop

My son is 7. His school van covers the commute, but school ends at 3:15 and neither of us is home until 6:30. We have been managing with a neighbour and some work-from-home days, and it is not holding. There is an after-school centre two buildings away that will receive him from the van, give a snack and supervise homework. On the visit everything sounded fine. My concern is the handover itself, which the staff described only vaguely. For those using an after-school centre: what did you specifically ask about van drops? Who receives the child, what happens if the van is early or late, and how do they let you know he has arrived? I'd like questions based on what went wrong for someone, not general reassurance.

daycare not after-school but same question for us. we asked who signs her in and whether they message when she arrives. they send a photo now. small thing, big relief

An arrival message is the minimum. When my older son did a holiday camp last year, the thing I didn't think to ask was what happens when the regular staff member is on leave. The first week she was off, a new person received him and nobody had told her he isn't allowed to leave with anyone except me or my partner. Nothing happened, but I only found out because he mentioned it. I'd ask for their written list of who can collect, and how a substitute gets to see it.

Photo on arrival is good. Do they also tell you if she didn't arrive? We had one day the handover got mixed up and nobody called, because no news was treated as normal.

      Replying to @fig_gecko_3608

That is the question I hadn't framed. A message on arrival is easy; a call when he hasn't arrived by a fixed time is the part that matters. I'll ask the centre what their cut-off is and who makes that call.
