son's stopped saying 'engineering' when relatives ask. now it's just 'not sure'

fern_sketch_4864

since he was about eight it was engineering, every time anyone asked. this summer at a family lunch he said 'not sure' and changed the subject. he's said it twice more since. i haven't asked him about it. i don't think i mind. i'm just noticing that i don't know what changed, and class 11 decisions are less than a year away.

My son said 'not sure' for most of class 10 and 11. In his case he had stopped wanting what his cousins were doing but didn't yet have anything to replace it with, so 'not sure' was the honest answer. What helped was not asking about careers at all and asking which subject he had liked that week. The answer came out of that, slowly. Has anything changed in what he talks about from school?

subjects is a good way in. he's been talking a lot about his geography teacher this term, which i hadn't connected to anything. will listen differently now.
