Sisters, 11 and 10, have shared a room forever. Now the elder wants her own

Our flat is a 2BHK, so there is no third room to give. Until this summer the two girls were happy together, same bed times, same books. Now my elder one says she needs "her own space" and wants her sister to sleep in our room. Younger one is very hurt. My shifts mean I'm not home most nights to referee. What did others do when there was no extra room?

we had one bedroom less than we needed for years. a curtain across the middle did more than i expected. cheap fix, try it before anything bigger

Curtain is on the list. But she told me today she wants a door that locks. So I think that's the real request.

At 11 I suspect the room is standing in for privacy more generally. Could she have one thing that is only hers, a cupboard or drawer that locks, or a fixed hour when the room is hers alone? With my daughter, who is 12, a lockable drawer settled far more than I expected. The younger one may also need to hear it isn't about her.
