power went for 4 hours last night. is the frozen expressed milk still usable

lagoon_river_4846

partner has been pumping for the daycare days so there's roughly three weeks of milk in the small freezer. power went around 6, back near 10. we didn't open the freezer once. most bags still feel hard. a couple at the front are soft at the edges. bin those, keep all of them? and is there anything people do about this short of a bigger inverter

If they still had ice crystals we refroze them, and the softer ones got used first the next day. That's what the nurse at our paediatrician's told us at the time, so do check with yours. Through the summer we also kept two frozen water bottles in the freezer, so it held cold longer whenever the power went.

'Soft at the edges' could mean anything. Still icy inside, or fully liquid? Those get different answers. Also check the freezer door seal. Ours was losing cold within two hours and the seal turned out to be the reason.

The water bottle trick works. We used it in Pune when the society generator didn't cover fridges. Cheap, and no wiring needed.

Bottles worked for a while, then we put the fridge on the inverter. That meant a bigger battery, and the fans lasted less time during long cuts. With two kids, in May, that was the harder trade: cold milk or a fan at night. It depends how long your cuts usually run.

Fifteen years ago in Saroornagar there was no inverter in our house at all, and long cuts every May. My mother kept a thermocol box and bought ice from the shop downstairs for exactly this. Old fashioned, but it held through an evening. These days my only power-cut worry is whether my son's phone is charged before his evening study hours.
