us team moved the standup earlier and i have to run it. 6.30 to 7.30 most weekdays, at least till december younger one needs to be bathed fed and on the van by 7.40. older one manages himself mostly but he's 12, he is not doing a 4 yr old's socks and breakfast thinking of asking our caregiver to start at 6.30 instead of 8 on call days. how did you work this out, extra per day or a fixed amount. and do they even agree to starts that early

I leave at 6.40 on school days, so I know that stretch well. Mornings in our house are covered by family, so I can't help on the pay side. One practical thing: if she starts at 6.30 and the van is at 7.40, that is exactly one hour with a 4 year old and no slack. Getting the bag, uniform and tiffin box ready the night before is what makes that hour work.

We're interviewing caregivers right now, for when my partner goes back to work, and almost everyone said 8 or later. One said 7 if we cover her auto. So early starts happen, but it's a smaller pool 🤷

Two things missing from the question. Is it every weekday or only call days? And is there a fixed end date? 'Till December, call days only' is a much easier yes than an open-ended 6.30 start. Put the end date in when you ask her.

Think about how she reaches you at 6.15. Buses are thin at that hour on some routes and autos charge more. When our helper had to come early during my on-call weeks, we paid her auto fare on those days on top of the extra hours. She told us later that mattered more to her than the extra amount itself.
