Invited to a colleague's son's first birthday. What do you take for a one year old?

New to Hyderabad since March, and this is my first invitation from someone at work. It's a proper function in a hall on Sunday, and my son, who's 8, is coming with me. It has been a long time since I shopped for a baby, and I don't know what's usual to give here. Clothes? A toy? An envelope? I'd rather not turn up with the third identical stacking toy of the evening.

Envelope is the most common from colleagues, koi bura nahi maanta, nobody will think it's cold. If you'd like to give something you can hold, board books are a safe bet. The baby will chew them and the parents will be grateful for anything that isn't plastic. Let your son pick one, kids enjoy choosing for a baby 🙂
