How did you manage night shifts with a newborn when both parents were working before delivery — looking for recent parent experiences

Nitin Saxena

We do not have grandparents staying with us and are trying to plan the first two months. Did you split the night into shifts, take turns on alternate feeds, or just survive day by day? I am especially curious what worked for nuclear families. Our family is split on this, which is why I am looking for first-hand experiences.

If you can, line up practical help with food and laundry rather than only baby-holding help. That was much more useful in our first month.

Thanks for saying this. Online advice often makes normal family life sound much more organised than it really is. Practical help from family was more valuable than extra advice for us. We made the change gradually rather than all at once.

For visitors we gave a simple message: please check before coming, wash hands, and postpone if unwell. Most people were fine once the rule was the same for everyone. The biggest surprise was that the practical routine mattered more than the option that looked best on paper.

Can I ask roughly what age/class your child was when you tried this? Having one simple shared routine saved us a lot of confusion. We made the change gradually rather than all at once.

Interesting — we had assumed the opposite. Helpful to hear a first-hand experience. Having one simple shared routine saved us a lot of confusion. We made the change gradually rather than all at once.

Thank you. I like that this does not require changing everything at once. Practical help from family was more valuable than extra advice for us. We only reached that conclusion after trying the other approach first.

We kept one shared note on the phone for feeds, medicines if any were prescribed, and questions for the paediatrician. It reduced the 'did you already do this?' confusion. My spouse had a different view initially, so we tried it for a few weeks before deciding.

For anything medical or if the baby seems unwell, I would check with your paediatrician rather than rely on forum experiences. But for logistics, parent tips are gold. We also checked anything health-related directly with our paediatrician. We made the change gradually rather than all at once.

I agree with this. Once we reduced the number of moving parts, everyone became calmer. What felt urgent at 2 a.m. often looked more manageable in daylight. We made the change gradually rather than all at once.
