First smartphone at 13: what rules did you agree before handing it over — looking for recent parent experiences

We are considering a phone mainly for travel and coordination. I would rather agree on expectations before the device arrives than fight later. What rules around bedroom use, passwords, social apps and downtime have stayed workable for your family?

I try to ask one real question and then stop. If I keep digging, the conversation closes immediately. The useful details often come later on their own. Our child reacted better once we explained the change in advance instead of announcing it on the day.

For outings, we started with short plans, known friends and a clear pickup time. Independence grew in small steps rather than one big yes/no decision. We are in Bengaluru and this came up for us last year.

I would avoid making every low mood a big family meeting. Sometimes being available quietly worked better than asking them to explain immediately. We are in Kolkata and this came up for us last year.

We wrote the phone rules together and applied a couple of them to adults too, especially no phones at dinner. That reduced the 'why only me?' argument. Our child reacted better once we explained the change in advance instead of announcing it on the day.

I agree with this. Once we reduced the number of moving parts, everyone became calmer. The rule worked better once adults followed the spirit of it too. I would still test it for a short period before making a long commitment.

Interesting — we had assumed the opposite. Helpful to hear a first-hand experience. The rule worked better once adults followed the spirit of it too. We made the change gradually rather than all at once.

This helps. I am going to add this to the questions for our next visit/meeting. The rule worked better once adults followed the spirit of it too. We only reached that conclusion after trying the other approach first.
