Teen wants Instagram because 'everyone in class has it' — looking for recent parent experiences

I know banning something completely can make it more attractive, but I am not comfortable saying yes just because classmates use it. Parents of 13–15-year-olds, how did you decide when to allow social media and what supervision was realistic? I am trying to decide this week, so practical details would help more than general pros and cons.

    Privacy and safety can coexist. We do not read chats routinely, but our teen knows what situations would make us step in. The rule worked better once adults followed the spirit of it too. We made the change gradually rather than all at once.

      Can I ask roughly what age/class your child was when you tried this? We try to keep one open channel without demanding every detail. We only reached that conclusion after trying the other approach first.
