Father-in-law's evening treat in this heat is a cold drink for each kid. They're 4 and 2

When he's over, he walks them down to the shop around 5 and they come back with a bottle each. Not juice, the fizzy stuff. The little one can barely hold hers. He means well and they love that walk with him. I'd hate to be the one who ends it. Has anyone managed to swap the treat for something else without killing the outing itself? Buttermilk is not going to compete, I know.

ours is ice cream from my mother-in-law. we didn't stop the walk, we changed the shop. the one near us has frozen fruit sticks and she gets to pick the flavour. two weeks of sulking and then it was fine

fruit sticks worked here too, for a while. then she remembered the other shop exists. now it's alternate days and nobody's fully happy, which seems to be how these things end
