Daycare wants him drinking from an open cup. He's just over one and treats it like a toy

Got a note on Friday that the toddler room is 'moving all children to open cups' and could we practise at home. At home he takes the cup, tips it down his shirt, laughs, hands it back. Every time. On release nights I get home after he's asleep, so practice is mostly weekends. Is a straw cup a reasonable middle step, or does it just delay things? And how much water on the floor is normal before it clicks 💛

It's a while ago for us, but I remember the floor phase lasting longer than anyone said it would. What helped was a very small steel cup with only a couple of sips in it, so a spill was small and nobody minded. Bath time was where most of the practising happened. I wouldn't worry about the straw cup delaying anything. It's a different skill, as far as I understood then.

We started the cup at home last month, ours is a bit younger. We went with a tiny cup and a towel on the floor, and decided not to count spills. Two weeks in, about half of it reaches his mouth, which I'm calling a win. The other half reaches me.
