Class 11 orientation: forty minutes on JEE and NEET, five on everything else

basil_veranda_1863

Daughter has taken computer science with maths in class 11. At orientation today, the coaching tie-up got forty minutes. Everything else, including what the CS course covers, got five. She's not sure she wants engineering. Is it like this at most CBSE schools now, or is ours unusual? And where do you get information on non-JEE options from people who aren't selling something?

ours is in class 8 and a jee foundation flyer has already come home in her bag. i don't think yours is unusual

Not unusual. I work with schools, and the tie-ups pay. For other options, ask the school for the last two years of where its students went. Most have that list and don't publish it.

I teach at a university, and many of our strongest undergraduates in the sciences and humanities never wrote JEE seriously. CUET and university-specific tests open a lot of good doors. If she isn't sure about engineering, class 11 is a reasonable time to look through a few course pages together without committing to anything. Coaching can always be added later. Time spent on coaching she doesn't want is harder to get back.

Ask for the CS syllabus and the lab hours in writing. What a school does in the lab tells you more about the course than any orientation talk.

i sit through these from the school side. the five minutes isn't a judgement on the other paths, it's who asked for time. the counsellor at most schools will give you a proper hour if you ask for one

at my elder one's school, even last year's class 9 parents' meeting was half about integrated coaching. we're state board and it's the same story, anthe. what helped us more was going to two university open days ourselves and letting her ask her own questions
