Back on the on-call rota in July with a baby who still wakes at night

jade_quilt_8966

My leave ends this month and from July I'm back on the cardiology on-call rota, roughly one night in five. When I'm called in it's usually between midnight and 4, and I have to be out of the door in minutes. My partner can manage the baby, but has court most mornings and needs to be functional. My parents help on fixed days, which we can plan around. The random 2 am calls are what I can't plan. How have other on-call parents handled night call-outs with a baby under one?

Different job but we had release nights when our younger one was a baby. the parent left at home just has to accept a bad night and a slow morning. what helped us was a rule that whoever might get the call tomorrow gets the full night's sleep tonight. does your partner's court schedule come out in advance?

Usually about a week ahead. The trouble is my rota comes a month ahead and the call-outs are random within it, so we can mark 'likely' nights but not real ones. The sleep rule is sensible though. We haven't been doing anything like that, we just both wake up.

we did something close to this when she was a baby. no family here so it was just the two of us. the part i didn't expect was that the bad bit wasn't the night, it was 3 pm the next day. we started keeping the morning after free of anything that couldn't move

      Replying to @mellow_trail_4020

I doubt my department will protect the next morning for me, but my partner can probably keep it light more easily than I can. Worth a conversation at home tonight.

We never had night call-outs, but a colleague of mine books a night caregiver only against her husband's on-call nights. She pays a monthly retainer so the person keeps those nights free, even when half of them pass without a call. Expensive for what it is, but nobody is alone with a crying baby at 3 am.

We tried a retainer for my release weeks last year. It worked well until the caregiver took a full-time job with another family, with no notice. If you go that way, keep a second number ready.
