Amma won't let the fan run in the baby's room. It's still 36 outside

My mother came from Kerala for the delivery and is staying the first few months. Her rule: no fan on the baby, ideally no fan at all, and the AC is out of the question. Our one month old is sweating through every vest and so am I. The paediatrician said a fan is fine as long as it isn't blowing straight at her. Amma heard this, nodded, and switched it off again the moment I left the room 😄 How did you handle this without a fight? I'm not winning on facts.

  • The nod and switch-off, I know it well. Our compromise was the fan on low, pointed at the wall, so the air moved but nothing blew on the baby. My mother could live with that because it wasn't 'on her'.

We put a small thermometer on the nursery wall. People argue with us, they don't argue with a number. 31 degrees inside the room ended the debate in one afternoon.

Pick the one thing that matters most to you, probably the fan, and let her win on the rest: the oil, the bath, the cap, whatever else is on her list. It's a few months, and she'll bend more easily once she feels her way is respected somewhere.

Sending sympathy from another sweaty house at 3 am. We kept him in a cotton vest only, no swaddle, and the fan at the other end of the room. My mother-in-law came round once she saw he slept longer. Give it a week ❤️
