first summer my daughter went to her aaji's she called every night for three days and then not at all for two weeks. i took it personally till i saw how brown she'd gone. they don't call when they're happy, i think

That matches what we saw with our elder son at that age. The calls came back the week before he was due home, mostly to negotiate the return date.

Our son spent three weeks with his grandparents at about the same age. We agreed on a short call at dinner time every second day, which he was allowed to keep brief. It made the calls less of a surprise for both of us, and I stopped waiting by the phone. Did the charger turn up?

From the other side: my nephew spends part of every summer with us. His calls home are short because there is too much going on, not because he isn't thinking of home. He asks about his mother at almost every meal. She never hears that part.

Here it is opposite, I am the one who is away. Sales tours, 4 or 5 days at a time. My son is 2, when I call he says 'papa' one time and runs back to his cartoon. But my wife says he checks the door every night. So maybe your son is also missing you, just not on phone.
