Speech therapy scheduling without exhausting the child after school

Anjali Patil

Between school, travel and therapy, weekdays are becoming very long. Has anyone moved sessions to weekends or reduced frequency and used home practice instead? I want support to remain useful, not feel like another class.

If possible, talk to another parent currently using the school's support system. Their experience can reveal the gap between policy and everyday practice. My spouse had a different view initially, so we tried it for a few weeks before deciding.

Please do not feel you have to choose every therapy or support at once. We got better results when the child still had enough unstructured time to be a child.

Thank you. I like that this does not require changing everything at once. The clearest answers came when we asked what support looks like on an ordinary school day. Your child's response may be different, but this was our experience.

Thank you. I like that this does not require changing everything at once. Another parent using the same support system gave us very useful practical context. We made the change gradually rather than all at once.

This is close to what my spouse is suggesting too. I may have been overcomplicating it. We learned to ask who is responsible for each support, not only what is written in policy. Your child's response may be different, but this was our experience.

Another parent using the same support system gave us very useful practical context. I would still test it for a short period before making a long commitment.

Same here. The logistics are what make the 'ideal' option difficult in real life. The child having some free time remained important for us too. We only reached that conclusion after trying the other approach first.

Good point about asking for the details in writing. I had not thought of that. Another parent using the same support system gave us very useful practical context. We only reached that conclusion after trying the other approach first.

We tried something similar once, but probably gave up too early. How long did you continue before judging it? We learned to ask who is responsible for each support, not only what is written in policy. In our house, the practical routine mattered more than the ideal plan.
