She bit me twice during feeds, and now the family says it's a sign to stop at 9 months

olive_drum_1830

She bit me twice yesterday while nursing, hard enough that I yelped, and she thought the yelp was hilarious. She's 9 months, with two bottom teeth since last month. My mother-in-law heard the yelp from the next room and has decided this is nature telling me to stop. I'd like to keep at least the morning and night feeds going for a few more months. What made the biting stop for you? I've read the 'take her off calmly' advice. Calm is difficult when it hurts.

Had the same with my daughter. She did it mostly at the end of a feed, when she was full and bored. Once I started ending the feed as soon as she slowed down, it mostly stopped.

That was exactly it with my son too. The end of the feed, when the room was more interesting than feeding. Ending early and putting him down for a minute helped. With my daughter a year later it barely happened, so it may also just be a phase some babies go through.

Father here, so this is second-hand. My partner had this with our son when he was around nine months. What we remember working was a cold teether just before the feed, because he seemed to be biting for his gums more than anything. It passed in a few weeks.

The yelp being hilarious is what keeps it going, I think. With my younger, I said a flat 'no biting' in the most boring voice I could manage and put her down for a few seconds. It took about a week. Her morning and night feeds carried on well past her first birthday after that, so it can settle. ❤️
