First smartphone at 13: what rules did you agree before handing it over?

We are considering a phone mainly for travel and coordination. I would rather agree on expectations before the device arrives than fight later. What rules around bedroom use, passwords, social apps and downtime have stayed workable for your family? If you faced the same decision and later changed your mind, I would love to know why.

    Privacy and safety can coexist. We do not read chats routinely, but our teen knows what situations would make us step in. Our child reacted better once we explained the change in advance instead of announcing it on the day.
