Everyone says stop the bottle at one. Where does that number come from?

Our son is a little past one and still has a bottle of milk before bed. Caregiver, relatives and two parenting pages all say it must stop now. Nobody can tell me why one and not eighteen months. Is there an actual reason, or is it just what everyone repeats?

Ours is two months, so we're at the very start of bottles, not the end. I asked our paediatrician the same question anyway. Her reason was teeth, mainly milk sitting in the mouth at night once they come in, and that the habit gets harder to drop the longer it goes. My amma's reason is 'because I said so' 🙂

With my elder we dropped it at about one because everyone said so, and with my younger we were more relaxed and stopped closer to two. Both are fine. What our doctor told us was to brush after the last bottle if it's going on for a while, and to move to a cup in the day first. Ask yours at the next check-up, you'll get the reason rather than just the rule.
