Daycare says she's very quiet. At home she babbles nonstop

ochre_puzzle_5379

At pickup yesterday the daycare teacher mentioned, kindly, that our daughter is 'very quiet' compared to the others and only says a couple of words there. At home she doesn't stop. Mostly babble, a few clear words in Gujarati, 'no' in English, and a Telugu word for water that none of us taught her. Should I read something into the daycare comment, or is this just a toddler who's shy in a big room? Her paediatrician review is next month and I'll ask then, but I'd like to know how it went for others.

Our son was the quiet one at playschool for months. Teachers thought he barely talked; at home he narrated everything. Hindi and English at home, mostly English at school, and I think he just didn't have enough of the school language yet to bother. Around two and a half he caught up and hasn't stopped since :)

That pattern is common in children who hear more than one language, and the experience above matches what I see often. Two things that may help at the paediatrician visit: count the words she uses across all her languages together, not English or Gujarati alone, and note whether she follows simple instructions at home. Those are likely to be the doctor's first questions. I would hesitate to read much into one comment from daycare without that fuller picture.

our son said almost nothing outside the house till about three. he's 10 now and the complaint from teachers is that he talks too much in class. just one family's story.
