The younger cousin wants every game to have teams

At family gatherings a younger cousin turns even board games into a competition between adults and children. Some players enjoy it; others retreat. I'd like to keep games welcoming without policing how everybody plays. What small ground rule would you set?

Ask players whether they want teams or individual turns before the game starts.

Keep a cooperative option nearby for people who don't want a score.
