Picky eater who separates every vegetable from rice — looking for recent parent experiences

Sravani Reddy

My child can detect one pea from across the room. I do not want to hide vegetables in everything forever, but repeated exposure has not changed much yet. What low-pressure strategies helped in your house?

We stopped commenting on how many bites were eaten. We serve one safe food plus the family food and let the child decide what to eat from the plate. We changed our approach after about a month because the first plan was too hard to sustain.

Could you share what you would do differently if you were starting again? We had better results once we stopped turning the meal into a negotiation. I would still test it for a short period before making a long commitment.

I agree with this. Once we reduced the number of moving parts, everyone became calmer. The school lunch-time limit was part of the problem for us. We made the change gradually rather than all at once.

Thanks for saying this. Online advice often makes normal family life sound much more organised than it really is. The school lunch-time limit was part of the problem for us. Your child's response may be different, but this was our experience.

This is close to what my spouse is suggesting too. I may have been overcomplicating it. We had better results once we stopped turning the meal into a negotiation. In our house, the practical routine mattered more than the ideal plan.

That makes sense. I think consistency is the part we are currently missing. Packing smaller portions reduced the amount coming back untouched. We only reached that conclusion after trying the other approach first.

This helps. I am going to add this to the questions for our next visit/meeting. Packing smaller portions reduced the amount coming back untouched. We are in Nagpur, so local logistics may be a little different.

If there are concerns about growth, allergies or nutrition, I would discuss the individual situation with your paediatrician/dietitian rather than copy another child's diet. For individual nutrition concerns we still checked with our child's doctor. I would still test it for a short period before making a long commitment.
