Class 8 child wants to quit all extracurriculars to focus only on marks — looking for recent parent experiences

Until last year my child enjoyed swimming, but now says school is too busy and wants to stop everything. I understand workload is rising, but I am worried life will become only tests and tuition. How have other parents balanced this age? Our family is split on this, which is why I am looking for first-hand experiences.
