Class 8 child wants to quit all extracurriculars to focus only on marks

Until last year my child enjoyed badminton, but now says school is too busy and wants to stop everything. I understand workload is rising, but I am worried life will become only tests and tuition. How have other parents balanced this age?

Pre-board marks were a useful signal, not a final verdict. We looked at the pattern of mistakes and picked two areas to fix instead of reacting to the total score. The biggest surprise was that the practical routine mattered more than the option that looked best on paper.

Try to keep stream discussions about subjects and daily work, not prestige. 'Would you enjoy doing this kind of work every week?' was a better question for us. We revisited the arrangement after the next round of tests. Your child's response may be different, but this was our experience.

That is reassuring. We are trying to avoid making this a bigger issue than it needs to be. Keeping one non-academic activity made the week much healthier for us. We are in Nagpur, so local logistics may be a little different.

Thank you. I like that this does not require changing everything at once. Our child responded better when the plan felt partly self-chosen. We are in Hyderabad, so local logistics may be a little different.

I agree with this. Once we reduced the number of moving parts, everyone became calmer. We revisited the arrangement after the next round of tests. In our house, the practical routine mattered more than the ideal plan.
